I have never really hidden the fact that I am a geek, but I am a selective geek. I watched Start Trek Next Gen with all my folks, but I never thought I was Data. But I do love Doctor Who. I recall watching it as a kid in all its daft camp glory. How missing one episode would make it difficult to catch up and know what was going on ... wait a minute, didn't the Daleks have them captured yesterday? So what's happening NOW?
Anyway, when Doctor Who was resurrected a few years back, I thought I'll keep my eye out for it. I caught a couple of episodes on CBC and thought "Yup, this is worth catching up on ... it looks like they actually have a special effects budget now ... " SO I bought the new season with Christopher Eccleston. It was good. I went back and bought the next season with David Tennant. It was very good. By the time I had bought the third season, Sox was interested enough to know what I was watching. "Blink" was the episode that converted him. SO we went back and watched them all from the beginning!
Now, one of the things that I love about our Vancouver friends is that they are open to new things. Perth people were good (and still are good) but we stopped sharing fascinations. ABout the time when they wouldn't come juggling because it was a Buffy night was when I realised we didn't have much in common any more. That and Pokemon. I will always hold a certain passionate hatred for Pokemon.
Anyway, where was I? Ah yes: The Doctor.
I mouthed off about Doctor Who a bit over time, and slowly people expressed interest .. we loaned, we cajoled, we encouraged internet purchases ... and now they are ALL in! Yay! So happy! We even watched the pre-death of DT's Doctor over the internet on Christmas night!
And this means that when I declare my birthday party to be a "Science Fiction" theme that there is no trouble when I dress up as a Tardis, Larissa is a Tree of Cheam, and Paddy is the Doctor himself!
